Applying to the University is your first step towards admission to a degree. You need to apply to do the MAAL degree (you can also choose the MAAL (TESOL) Major at this point) or the MAAL (Hons) degree. It is important to realise that these are two separate degrees (or courses). Once you have been accepted and offered admission, you will be sent an official letter of offer with information to assist you in your second step, which is enrolling in the units you are interested in studying. (For the 2011 application process a special course code for the MAAL (TESOL) Major: MAALTL, has been created for students who think they might qualify for Youth Allowance or Austudy. Students should select this code if they are thinking of applying for Student Income Support.)

3.1 How do I apply?

For both degrees first you need to complete the appropriate online admissions form. Which form you require depends on your citizenship status. Follow one of the two links below:

Online application form for Australian or New Zealand citizens

Online application form for International Students
(only for Non-Australian/New Zealand citizens)

When you click on 'Submit' the form will be sent to either the Student Centre (for Australia/New Zealand Citizens), or to the International Office (for International students). You will receive an automated response telling you that the form has been received, along with an estimate of the time when you will be notified of the result of your application. Once your application is approved, you will receive an enrolment package by hard copy mail which contains all the information you need.

For International students information on the Admissions process and the relevant documentation required at the time of application is available at Admissions Information. Information for domestic students is available here.

If you require assistance as an international applicant please email ioadmit@une.edu.au

3.2 How can I get an application package?

The simplest way to apply is to use the appropriate online form. However, if you'd like more information or to have an application form mailed to you, please lodge a request through AskUNE.

3.3 Can I apply online?

Yes – there is an online application form, as detailed above.

3.4 What do I need to send for application and registration?

When you complete the appropriate online application form (see above), you may need to provide transcripts and other indicated documents. Further information on the relevant documentation required at the time of application is available at Admissions Information.

3.5 The registration form refers to an “exam center code” – what's that?

There are no formal exams in our Master of Applied Linguistics. This code is irrelevant to us, so just leave this blank or write n/a.

3.6 When is the deadline for applications?

Applications can be submitted at any time. However in order to have completed the registration and enrolment process in time for a particular trimester, these deadlines apply:

  • For 1st Trimester (Feb-June) you need to apply by December 24 (or February 6 for late applications).
  • For 2nd Trimester (June-Oct) you need to apply by TBA.

In 2012 there is no admission to begin studey in Trimester 3.

The UNE Student Centre will still try and process late applications – so it might be worth trying if you've just missed out, but we can make no promises.

3.7 How do I apply for the MAAL (Hons) if I've already done the MAAL?

You can apply for the MAAL (Hons) right from the start if you are anticipating doing both 48 credit points of coursework and a thesis. However if you do not meet the Distinction average requirement you will exit with the MAAL degree.

We advise students to apply for the regular MAAL program, and then once they know they have successfully completed all requirements, then apply for the MAAL (Hons). All 48 credit points of coursework will carry over to the MAAL (Hons), and then you only need to complete the 24 credit point Dissertation Component – LING600. If you have completed the MAAL Degree and you are applying for the MAAL (Hons) Dissertation Component only then you will need to complete a Thesis Proposal Form and lodge this with your Online Application.

3.8 How do I enrol in MAAL units?

A useful resource when planning your degree is our Course and Unit Catalogue which includes comprehensive information about our courses. You will find information about compulsory and elective units and suggested course plans. You will also find this catalogue helpful if you are unsure whether you have enrolled in the correct units for your course. Information on our Courses is available at:

http://www.une.edu.au/courses/courses/MAAL

http://www.une.edu.au/courses/courses/MAALH

Note that these pages have two tabs: Course Information and Course Rules and Plans. (To view the Course Rules and Plans relevant to you, select the year you started your course from the top right hand corner.)

Also here you will find a Program of Study that outlines which units you can study as part of your degree. It contains  a list of both core units (units you must complete as part of your degree) and elective units (which you complete to fulfil a certain credit point value).

You can view here the Program of Study for the MAAL, MAAL (TESOL) and the MAAL (Hons) full program.

3.9 What’s the difference between changing courses and transferring to new course rules?

Changing courses is when you want to change from one degree to another. To do this you need to apply for entry into the new course and apply for advanced standing for the units you have already completed in the old course. You would have to do this if you wanted to change from the MAAL degree to the MAAL (Hons) degree (and vice versa) for example. (Note there are progression requirements of a Distinction average to be eligible to complete the MAAL (Hons)).

  • In order to transfer to another UNE course you must apply for admission to the new course, and then if/when you have been admitted, you should delete any enrolled units from your old course and enrol in units in your new course. You also need to apply for advanced standing for units completed in the old course.
  • Current MAAL (Hons) students who want to do the TESOL Major and think they might qualify for Student Income Support (See FAQ7.6) would need to change courses to the MAAL Degree and choose the MAALTL code to be eligible. Once they have completed the 48 credit points for the MAAL (TESOL) Major then they would have to reapply for the MAAL (Hons) degree to complete the Dissertation component LING600.

Transferring to new course rules: In most cases you will be able to complete your course under the rules you commenced in, subject to completing your course within the permitted time frame. However, as we have introduced the new TESOL major and changed the course name for 2011 from the Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics to the Master of Applied Linguistics for both the MAAL and the MAAL (Hons), you may wish to transfer to the new course rules.

  • If you wish to change from your current course rules to the 2011 course rules, you will need to complete and submit a Move to Latest Course Rules form found at http://www.une.edu.au/for/current-students/forms to facilitate this change. Once you have submitted this form you can complete your online enrolment. Please be sure to monitor your UNE e-mail account in case the University needs to contact you regarding your choice. Note that if you are a Domestic Full Fee paying student, transferring to the new rules may also mean a transfer to a higher fee structure.
  • To transfer course rules to do the MAAL (TESOL) Major, you will have to transfer to the 2011 course rules for the MAAL or the MAAL (Hons) and nominate the major. You will need to complete EDLI502 and EDLI504 along with your 4 core units and 2 elective units. If you think you might qualify for Youth Allowance or Austudy you must specify that you want to transfer to the MAALTL course code as well.
