Learning and Teaching

The School of Behavioural, Cognitive and Social Sciences offers a wide range of courses in the key subject areas of Geography, Linguistics, Planning, Psychology, and Sociology. Our strong online presence gives you quick and easy access to information relevant to your enrolment at UNE. This page provides a link to general BCSS policies and wider UNE policies that are relevant to Teaching and Learning.

BCSS School Policies

The following teaching policies are common to all units offered through the School of Behavioural, Cognitive and Social Sciences.  Students are also directed to further information provided by each of the four disciplines within BCSS, and Unit Information for those units in which they are enrolled.

Extensions Policy

Unit Co-ordinators may grant up to 30 days extensions on assessments. An extension will not be granted beyond the end of the examination period. Thereafter, students will have to apply for a Special Extension of Time through the Student Centre.

Late Penalty Policy

Late assignments submitted without an extension will attract a penalty of up to 2% deducted per day (maximum 10% per week), with a maximum of 3 weeks (30%).  Thereafter a late assessment will be recorded as having been received for the purposes of completion, but attract a zero mark.  Extension periods and penalties are to be explicitly stated in the Unit Information at the start of semester.  Late penalties will be administered according to the discretion of the unit co-ordinator.

Mandatory Intensive School Policy

In the case of a student failing to attend a Mandatory Intensive School, BCSS will withdraw the student without academic penalty.  If the school is before the census date students will simply be withdrawn.  If after the census date, students will be withdrawn without academic penalty (though they will still have a HECS liability).
