Work history:

Professor Smith’s previous appointments have included: Head of School, Professional Development and Leadership, UNE; Associate Professor (administration and leadership), Central Queensland University; member of the Senior Executive Service of the Queensland Government, during which time he was Executive Consultant to the Professional Practices Unit and Director of the Strategic Research Unit for the Department of Employment, Training and Industrial Relations; and Managing Director of his own SME, The Knowledge Company.

Professor Smith has conducted a number of major reviews for government, and has participated on a number of national committees, particularly in the area of employment. For five years, he chaired the Research Committee of the Queensland Tertiary Entrance Procedures Authority.

Currently, Professor Smith is an International Consultant to the World Bank funded review of Higher Education in Vietnam (2006 – 2020). He has also recently worked as an International Consultant for the World Bank funded development of programs for training the teachers of teachers in Sri Lanka. For the last three years, Professor Smith has taught Masters students in-country in Hong Kong and Vietnam.

He has received both national and international awards for his professional contribution.
