Dr Van der Kraan was born in the Netherlands and educated there, in Canada and in Australia. He has specialised in the economic development of Southeast Asia and has been a tutor at the Australian National University in Canberra, a lecturer at Murdoch University in Perth, and a Visiting Fellow at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam. He has published extensively on the economic history of Indonesia, especially the islands of Java, Bali and Lombok. He has an ineterst also in the history of technology and has published in that field. Currently, Dr Van der Kraan is Senior Lecturer in the School of Economics, University of New England.

Research interests and current research projects related to Asia:


1) The Dutch East India Company (VOC) in Asia;
2) Ryckloff van Goens: His Life and Times, 1619-82.
