Cliff Goddard was born and educated in Australia, receiving his PhD in Linguistics in 1984 from the Australian National University. He is a leading figure in the natural semantic metalanguage (NSM) approach to language, and its off-shoot, the theory of cultural scripts. In the 1980s his descriptive focus was on Australian Aboriginal languages (especially the Yankunytjatjara dialect of Central Australia), but in the 1990s he shifted focus to Asian languages, especially Malay (Bahasa Melayu). He has published widely in both these areas, and also on a range of other topics in linguistic theory and language typology. Among other units, he teaches courses on Asian languages and on intercultural communication at UNE. He is currently finalising a textbook on Asian languages for publication with Oxford University Press.
