Dr Siri Gamage was born in Southern Sri Lanka in 1951. Primary and Secondary education in Walasmulla. Entered University of Ceylon in 1968 to follow a special degree in Sociology. 1974-1986 taught Sociology Undergraduate students at the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka (1977-1980 did postgraduate studies in Sociology at the University of Hawaii, Honolulu on an East West Centre Scholarship). 1986-1989, doctoral studies in the department of anthropology and sociology, Monash University, Australia. 1990-present, Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in multicultural studies, Faculty of Education, Health and professional Studies, University of New England. Married with two children.

Research interests and current research projects related to Asia:

Research interests: comparative knowledge systems and international education, Sociology of education, intercultural education, ethnic minorities in Asia in the face of development challenges, ethnic conflicts and peace, voices of the oppressed groups, Sri Lankan society and culture.

Current Research projects related to Asia: None at the moment. Doctoral research was on Sri Lanka’s rural social stratification. In the process of conceptualising research in the above mentioned interest areas.

Other Relevant Information:

Active in networking with educational institutions in Asia, especially in terms of arranging collaboration with various academic Schools of the University of New England eg. Sri Lanka, Bangladesh.

Coordinator of the 7th International Conference on Sri Lanka Studies held 1999 in Canberra. On the Committee to select the venue for next conference in 2003.

On the planning committee for the Australia and New Zealand Association of Comparative Education conference to be held at UNE in December, 2001.

Radio commentator in Australia regarding current issues in Sri Lanka.
