Writers and Illustrators in Residence

Writers and Illustrators in Residence in the New England Region: Creative Communities in Children’s and Young Adult Literature (2012-2014).

Funded by a grant from the Copyright Agency Cultural Fund, in association with Arts New England and the School of Arts at the University of New England, the program will fund three residencies per year, for three years, from 2012-2014.

As well as paying $5,000 (2 weeks work at ASA rates), the program will subsidise accommodation and transportation costs.

Each residency will be 2 weeks in duration, and will require the writer/illustrator in residence to conduct the equivalent of 5 workshop days.

Residencies will be held in the second half of the year, at times to be negotiated.

On campus accommodation will be provided through Mary White College.

Studio space and/or accommodation will be provided through the New England Regional Art Museum (NERAM).

Workshops will be geared to target the New England region, with a focus on the following demographics

  • Primary Schools
  • Secondary Schools
  • Local University and TAFE students
  • The New England Community.

We encourage applications from writers and illustrators working in the following fields:

  • Graphic Novels
  • Young Adult Fiction
  • Digital/Interactive Media
  • Children's Literature

Criteria for applicants include the following:

  • A clearly articulated plan for the residency (i.e. style of workshops offered, and creative project to be undertaken during residency) should the application be successful.
  • A publishing profile in the relevant fields of children’s or young adult literature, picture books, graphic novel, comic books, multimedia and digital art.
  • Experience running workshops for the relevant demographics is desirable.
  • Evidence of NSW child protection certification, or a commitment to obtain one before residency.
  • Two letters of reference from professionals in relevant fields, such as literature, publishing, education, or community events.  Letters should attest to the applicant’s ability to run public workshops and other events.  (Please note: a letter from one’s agent is not considered sufficient.)

The application form is available here. Applications should be sent to creativecommunities@une.edu.au by 1 June 2013.

This is the second of three years of the program; details of the 2014 program will be announced towards the end of this year.

In 2012 the first three writers/illustrators in residence were:

Clare McFadden (Author and illustrator of The Flying Orchestra)

Kevin Burgemeestre (Illustrator and author of B is for Bravo)

Tristan Bancks (Author of My Life and Other Stuff I Made Up and Galactic Aventures: First Kids in Space)
