About the Master of Applied Theatre Studies

The course is divided into four core components, all linked to a practical performance project, and two electives.

The first part of the core is a thorough preparation for the staging of a theatre event, including extensive dramaturgical research and script analysis prior to rehearsals beginning for the practical project.

The second part is visualising and describing the specifics of the proposed performance, in various formats, such as the development of a proposal to a (real or hypothetical) arts festival encouraging them to include it in their program, the writing (and possibly submission) of a funding application, and so on.

The third part is the production itself, and a detailed subsequent record, analysis and reflective evaluation of it.

The final part is an extended essay or dissertation which derives from the work on the project, on a specific aspect of the topic to be selected by the student in consultation with the teaching staff.

There is space in the degree for a further two elective components which can be chosen from a wide range of topics, including academic writing.

The course is intended to allow students to extend their professional knowledge by developing and utilising research skills in a relevant area of study, and then applying, testing and evaluating the knowledge gained in the creation of a practical project.

The course assumes that students will have skills and experience in theatre practice already, and for the most part these are not taught as part of the course, though we hope that students will discover and try out new approaches to aspects of theatre practice as part of their study.
