Introduction
Chocolate, salsa, tango, merengue, tequila, tacos, tomates! Well, that vocabulary goes to show you that you already know some Spanish. As you can see Spanish is not that difficult. In fact, if you can say cho-co-late you're already on your way not only to learning Spanish but also to enjoying it.
Why Study Spanish at UNE?
Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in the world (after Chinese and before English) according to Ethnologue: Languages of the World (2009, ed. Paul Lewis, 16th edn.,Dallas, Tex.: SIL International). At least 329 million people speak Spanish as their first language and many more speak it as a second language. Native speakers of Spanish can be found across five continents and more than twenty countries. This diversity, both in human and geographical terms, offers Spanish graduates a wealth of opportunities for their professional future.
- Spanish is the official language in 21 countries, and is widely spoken in the US, where it is the first language of 10.7% of the population.
- Spanish is the language of one of the world's fastest growing economic regions - Latin America - and is in increasing demand for business.
- Spanish is the third most widely used language on the internet.
- Spanish is the official language of two of Australia's APEC partners (Chile and Mexico), and is spoken by about 20% of people in a third (Philippines).

At the University of New England we offer Spanish studies at all levels, from elementary to advanced, both internally and externally. Our first trimester beginners’ unit, Spanish101, which is followed in second trimester by Spanish102, assumes no prior knowledge of Spanish. More advanced units cover a variety of subjects, including 20th century Latin American Literature, Latin American music and history, and the role of the translator.
