I'm interested in Higher Degree Research. What should I do first?

Read the information about our Higher Degree Research programs to find out which program best suits your needs and experience.

I do not have the fulfil the requirements for admission to a Higher Degree Research program. Do I have any other options?

The School of Arts offers undergraduate, Honours and coursework Masters programs. These courses can provide a pathway to Higher Degree Research programs. Please go to our Postgraduate Study page for further information on these course.

Now that I've decided on which course I want to take, how do I apply?

The information for both the admission to UNE and enrolment in postgraduate study can be found at http://www.une.edu.au/for/future-students/

The information webpages for both the Master of Philosophy and the PhD program detail the process of application, which includes first contacting a potential supervisor or the School's Postgraduate Coordinator, then supplying a preliminary information package.

What happens after I submit my preliminary information package?

Your package will be assessed by the relevant academic staff of the School of Arts. You will then be contacted regarding your options, with regard to potential degree paths and possible supervisors.

You may be invited to discuss your project in person, by email or telephone, or to submit more material. You will also be advised of the university's enrolment procedures and due dates and assisted through this process.

Your package will be considered as quickly as possible. Every attempt will be made to contact you within 30 working days (6 weeks) of receipt of your package. Applicants are advised to check the University calendar regarding University holidays and other vacation periods. Material may be processed more slowly in non-teaching periods.

Please be patient regarding the process of your application. It will be in the process of being carefully assessed and we will contact you in due course. You will receive notification that your preliminary information package has been received and is being processed.

What kind of project can I work on?

Admission is determined both on the quality of your application, and the relevance of your project area to the work, interests and skills of School staff, together with the availability of supervisors in your area. The School's Postgraduate Coordinator (see below) will be able to give you advice about the suitability of your project.

What about cross- or multi-disciplinary projects?
