The English Major in the Bachelor of Arts

The Bachelor of Arts consists of 144 credit points. The Major in English consists of 48 credit points in English Units.

For students commencing in 2011 the two Prescribed units for English are first year level ENGL101 (An Introduction to Literary Studies) and ENGL 102 (Literature and Society), each of which is rated at 6 credit points.

Students must then complete six units (amounting to 36 credit points) chosen from eleven English units offered at 300 level. In table format, the Program of study is as follows:

ENCO307 Australian Folklore and Folk Speech 6cps
ENCO310 Children's Literature: Picture Books and Fantasy 6cps
ENGL304 Critical and Creative Writing Through Literature 6cps
ENGL305 The History of the English Language 6cps
ENGL341 Renaissance Matters 6cps
ENGL351 Victorian Literature and Culture 6cps
ENGL361 American Literature: From Puritans to the Present 6cps
ENGL372 Australian Literature: 1930 to the Present 6cps
ENGL375 Feminism and Literature 6cps
ENGL390 Contemporary Literary Criticism: Theory and Practice 6cps

If you commenced after 2008 and before 2011 ENCO307 and ENCO310 are not included in your major.

Course Requirements

To achieve the overall total of 144 credit points, candidates must complete a further 96 credit points by completing a second Major (eight units amounting to 48 credit points) chosen from the following list, and Elective Units (eight units amounting to 48 credit points).

You can choose your eight elective units (48 credit points) from any units offered by the University, subject to your meeting overall course requirements and prerequisite and timetabling requirements for individual units.
