What is the Asian Languages Accreditation Program?
UNE’s Asian Languages Accreditation Program provides professional development in language acquisition for registered (in-service) school teachers. Teachers will undertake part-time studies by distance (online) education in Chinese (Mandarin) or Japanese or Indonesian languages and teaching methodologies, as part of a Diploma in Modern Languages. Intensive (residential) schools are offered in some of the language units but are not mandatory.
Student Contribution Sponsorship
The Student Contribution Sponsorship includes:
- A full Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS) grant for up to 8 units in Chinese, Indonesian, Japanese or approved relevant cultural studies and language methodology;
- Subsidised travel (within Australia) and accommodation when attending non-mandatory intensive schools at UNE for study in Asian language units; and
- for eligible students who take up the optional overseas study component in China, Indonesia or Japan, a subsidy of up to $4000 is available to cover travel, accommodation and meals for the three weeks they are overseas.
All study covered by the Student Contribution Sponsorship must be completed by December 2012.
Why enrol in the Asian Language Accreditation Program?
The Asian Language Accreditation Program, undertaken through the Diploma of Modern Languages, provides a flexible online study pathway to language acquisition at a level that meets the NSW Institute of Teachers accreditation requirements to teach an Asian language
- as a first or second teaching area for those who have either done the specified Asian language to HSC level, or are native speakers of the specified Asian language;
- as a second teaching area only for those with no previous Asian language experience.
The breadth of the Diploma of Modern Languages provides ALAP Teachers with a solid grounding in their choice of contemporary Asian languages, languages education pedagogy and Asian culture.
Through the use of innovative, interactive communications technologies such as the virtual classroom and the e-portfolio and exposure to up to date learning and teaching resources, graduates of the ALAP scholarship program will attain high quality language and language pedagogy skills that can be directly integrated in the teacher’s own classroom.

Althouth the sponsored program will end in 2012, the interest generated by this program may result in the continuation of a similar study program in the Diploma of Modern Languages from 2013, which will enable current teachers to upgrade and expand their teaching areas.
