Sophos Antivirus for UNE Staff

The University has moved to Sophos Antivirus software to protect all machines connected to the University network from viruses and other electronic attacks. The University’s McAfee license ended on 25th August 2010 and all machines connected to the University network are required to have Sophos Antivirus installed.

If you are connected to the University network and you need Sophos Antivirus please refer to the instructions below. The process is different for those machines logged into the ‘UNE’ domain (explanation below).

Q. Am I on the UNE Domain (Windows PCs only)?

You are logged into the ‘UNE’ domain if at the time of logging into your computer the third field (below the password field) has ‘UNE’ displayed before clicking to login. Some machines don’t have a third field when logging on and are not on the domain.

Q. How do I get Sophos for a PC on the ‘UNE’ domain (explained above)?

A. To obtain Sophos, please email the Service Desk (servicedesk@une.edu.au) with the name of your machine (instructions below) and we will push the Sophos software to your machine on your return.

Find your machine name on PC:

Go to Control Panel → Double-click on System → Click on the "Computer Name" Tab → Machine Name is found next to Full Computer Name e.g. UNE_001.ad.une.edu.au

After you have provided this information, the Sophos management console will push out the installation of the Sophos Antivirus software. This includes automatically removing any existing antivirus software on the machine. You might notice the Sophos Shield pop-up in the right hand system tray, but otherwise all changes will occur while they work. Nothing needs to be done by the staff member, although they may be asked to perform a restart at some stage during the week.

Q. How do I get Sophos for a UNE PC not on the ‘UNE’ domain (explained above)?

A. PC users not on the domain named ‘UNE’ will have to self install in order to become part of the managed console. After this installation all updates will be automatic, only the initial install has to be done manually. Staff will need to uninstall any current antivirus software on their computer and restart their machines before installation. Instructions and a software CD available from the Service Desk. Please contact the IT Service Desk on x5000 or email servicedesk@une.edu.au to organise a copy.

Be aware an unprotected computer can be virus ridden in minutes so please do not delay in organizing the installation.

Q. How do I get Sophos for a MAC Computer?

A. MAC users will have to self install in order to become part of the managed console. After this installation all updates will be automatic, only the initial install has to be done manually. Staff will need to uninstall any current antivirus software on their computer before installation. Instructions and a link to the software are available here

Q. I run a windows operating system on my MAC (e.g. Bootcamp, VMware or equivalent). How do I get Sophos on my machine?

A. You will need to install Sophos on each version of the OS, ie. the MAC operating system and Windows operating system, of your machine.

For the MAC side please consult the “How do I get Sophos for a MAC computer?” question above.

For the Windows side, please consult the “How do I get Sophos for a PC not on the ‘UNE’ domain?” question above.
