UNE Owned Machines Frequently Asked Questions

Am I on the UNE domain?

You are logged into the ‘UNE’ domain if at the time of logging into your computer the third field (below the password field) has ‘UNE’ displayed before clicking to login. Some machines don’t have a third field when logging on, i.e. MAC computers and thus you are not on the domain.

How do I get Sophos for a PC on the ‘UNE’ domain (explained above)?

During the rollout; 3rd – 25th August, the Sophos management console will push out the installation of the Sophos Antivirus software. This includes automatically removing any existing antivirus software on the machine. The user might notice the Sophos Shield pop-up in the right hand system tray, but otherwise all changes will occur while they work. Nothing needs to be done by the staff member, although they may be asked to perform a restart at some stage during the week.

The McAfee license ends on 25th August and any machines that have not upgraded their antivirus software before that date will be unprotected against viruses and other electronic attacks.

After the 25th August, please email the service desk (servicedesk@une.edu.au) with the name of your machine (instructions below) and we will push the Sophos software to your machine on your return.

Be aware an unprotected computer can be virus ridden in minutes so please do not delay in organizing the installation.

Find your machine name on PC:

Go to control panel → Double click on System → Click on the Computer Name Tab → Machine Name is found next to Full Computer Name e.g. UNE_001.ad.une.edu.au

Can I opt out of Sophos?

It is a requirement that all machines connected to the University network be protected with Sophos Antivirus. Therefore, once Sophos antivirus is installed on your system, it cannot be uninstalled unless permission is granted by the central administrator. If you have a genuine case for uninstalling Sophos please contact the Service Desk via email. The implementation of Sophos antivirus is to protect the UNE computing environment by reducing malware infection, data loss and malicious URLs.

The introduction of a centrally managed antivirus product is in the best interest of the university and is supported by the University’s IT Security Policy (D10/39292) and the Rules for the Use of Information and Communication Facilities and Services (D09/112214).

Why are we using Sophos Antivirus?

Sophos was selected after the project team tested three options against certain criteria including level of protection, cost, risk and ease of deployment. Sophos was found to pickup viruses that its competitors missed and its managed console environment will give UNE increased control over virus protection. Details on the Sophos product can be found at http://www.sophos.com/

I have Sophos on my computer but my previous antivirus product has not been removed. What should I do?

The installer is programmed to remove most antivirus products however, with the wide range of antivirus products and variations available it is not possible for the installer to remove every type of antivirus product.

When you notice that you have both antivirus products on your computer, the Sophos blue shield plus one other, then take steps to remove your current antivirus program (as per the Vendor instructions for that particular program) and restart your computer. You should be left with Sophos antivirus. If further issues occur, please contact the Service Desk on 6773 5000 or servicedesk@une.edu.au.
