The Australian Learning and Teaching Council offers grants valued at up to $220k aimed to enhance learning and teaching in higher education. This overarching mission is reflected in the ALTC’s strategic directions, which are supported by a range of objectives, values and overriding principles.
ALTC’s values of inclusiveness, long-term change, diversity, collaboration and excellence apply to all the grant programs. The guidelines for each grant program clearly state the objectives and values which must be addressed.
Grant applications must address a single specific priority within a program. Applications are assessed for their contribution to the mission and objectives of the ALTC and their synergy with the ALTC’s values and principles for action, as well as their impact on the discipline or sector and the practicality of the project put forward.
Proposed projects must go beyond what would be considered the normal activity of a university, even when the quality of what is proposed is excellent. ALTC maintains a register of funded projects which can be searched. Information about current and completed UNE projects is available here.
Grants are offered under three distinct programs:

UNE Application Procedures
All applications to ALTC must be endorsed by UNE. Potential applicants must familiarize themselves with the UNE application process and note the internal deadlines. Note that the requirements and dates are different for projects led by UNE and projects where UNE is participating as a project partner.
Staff who wish to apply for an ALTC grant are responsible for preparing the application and submitting it as per the UNE application procedures. The TLC provides general support in the form of online resources, information sessions and workshops, and budget assistance. Additional support for UNE led projects may also be available in your School or Faculty. Early consultation with your Head of School is recommended to ensure your project concept will be supported by the school.
The role of the UNE ALTC Grants and Awards Committee is to register and assess project concepts for both UNE led and UNE as project partner applications, and to assess completed applications only where UNE is the project leader. Registration of project concepts ensures UNE does not submit applications that compete with each other. Early registration of concepts is recommended as registrations are processed in order of receipt. Assessment ensures that high quality ideas are supported to application stage and that final applications endorsed by UNE are of high quality.
Applicants must carefully note submission dates relating to their application on this website as internal deadlines differ from those advertised by the ALTC. The relevant ALTC deadlines are noted in the guidelines, with UNE internal deadlines significantly earlier. These are set to ensure internal processes can be completed and to encourage timely completion of applications. The dates are calculated according to the following process:
| Concept Form due - UNE led projects | Approx. Three months earlier than ALTC date |
| Concept Form due - UNE as project partner | Two months earlier than ALTC date |
| Final Application due - UNE led projects | One month earlier than ALTC date |
| ALTC closing date | As advertised by ALTC |
In the month between the UNE Final Application date and the ALTC submission date the Grants Committee will read and consider the application and make recommendation to senior management regarding institutional endorsement. The ICO is then responsible for final submission to ALTC.
