How AIA Works
The only reason AIA exists is to help UNE's International students
- promote social interaction between International students and their families and members of the Armidale town and campus communities
- provide the means by which the International Students and Armidale communities become more aware of each other's cultures
- assisting with the general welfare of International students and their families during their stay in Armidale.
People become members of AIA because they are interested in that AIA does. No one is paid a salary or any money, everyone participates in AIA as volunteers because they want to.
All associations in Australia have to follow the law for associations and they all have a similar format and a way of doing things to make sure that everything done by the association is legal and done in such a way as to make it very difficult to do the wrong thing by the members of the association.
AIA does not have any joining fees or membership fees. Membership is free.
AIA members meet once a year, called the Annual General Meeting (or AGM) and elect a committee to manage what AIA is doing for that coming year. This would include:
- planning activities for International students each semester
- keeping membership records
- keeping accounts records
The Committee has a President, two Vice-Presidents (Community and International), a secretary, a treasurer and ten committee members – five international students and five community members.
The Committee meets at least three times each year, but usually about every six weeks during semesters.
Then it is time for the AGM again. In the meantime, we have fun, enjoy meeting and working with people and look forward to participating in the activities we plan.

All Members and Committee Members need to know what is in the Constitution so they know what to expect and what can be done and how to do it.
