Research in the Faculty
| 2006 has seen some very positive and encouraging signs of research productivity in the Faculty. The 2005 review of publications, competitive grants held, and HDR supervision, showed that every staff member of the Faculty was contributing in at least one of these areas, and staff have continued to build on this solid foundation. Over the last twelve months the Faculty achieved marked increases in research grant applications, successful research grants, commonwealth research funding, and in DEST category publications. The Faculty Book Launch held at the end of 2005 showcased the largest number of books published by Faculty members for the past eight years, and in 2006 we hope to better that record. As the Faculty moved into 2006 it submitted 22 of the 51 submissions of the UNE applications to the Australian Research Council for nationally competitive research grant funding. Every School was represented in this process. As well, we had seven continuing ARC Discovery Projects; two Linkage Projects; an NHMRC project; and one ARC LIEF grant. Faculty staff have recently been successful with 5 of the 9 ARC Discovery Projects awarded to UNE for funding beginning in 2007. Staff have also been part of successful bids for research funding through other Australian universities. Research effort is not limited to academic staff in the Faculty. At the end of 2005, we held the first Faculty-wide postgraduate conference, with around 40 papers presented by the students. In 2005, the Faculty also completed an innovative project, designing and implementing a new database for the management of higher degree research student records to assist with supervision and tracking of research progress. During 2006 the database has been taken up UNE-wide under the direction of the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research). As this web site testifies, academic staff in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences have contributed greatly to Australia's proud research tradition in the Humanities and Social Sciences.
