Classics and Ancient History
The Jennifer Crew Prize in History $100. Awarded to the undergraduate with the best performance in either HIST 396 or 398. In any year when neither unit is offered, to go to the best performance in any two other 300-level units offered in History.
The Louise T Daley Prize for Australian History $150. Undergraduate and postgraduate students in the Faculty of Arts presenting theses or dissertations on a topic in Australian History. The prize shall be awarded each year, on the recommendation of the Head of the School of Classics & History, to the student who produces the best thesis or dissertation on a topic in Australian History, provided it is certified by the Head of the School of Classics & History to be of at least First Class Honours BA standard, or, in the case of works submitted for the Master of Arts (Honours) or PhD degrees, of a corresponding standard of excellence. In any year when there is no thesis or dissertation in Australian History of the requisite standard, the prize shall not be awarded.
The Maiben Davies Prize $500. Awarded to the undergraduate, if of sufficient merit, who obtains the best results for two units in Greek at 300-level, in the same year, including CLLA 301 (Greek Strand) .
The James Dolan Memorial Prize in History $175. Awarded to the undergraduate, if of sufficient merit, who obtains the best results in a 300‑level History unit.
The Katharine Dolan Memorial Prize for 100-level Ancient History $70. Awarded to the student, if of sufficient merit, who obtains the best results in ANCH 110 and 111, provided that both units have been taken by the student in the same year.
The Bishop Doody Memorial Gold Medal for Latin Medal. Awarded to the student, if of sufficient merit, who obtains the best results in third year Latin.
Charles Ede Prize $250 (including a book to the value of $100). Awarded for the best essay, if of sufficient merit, by any student currently enrolled in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, which demonstrates research capacity and focuses on one or more objects in the Museum of Antiquities, The University of New England.
J Hanna Classics Prize $100. Undergraduates. Awarded to the student who obtains the best results in first year Latin.
The Betty Newsome Memorial Scholarship $250. Awarded to the undergraduate, if of sufficient merit, who obtains the best results in 200/300 level history units taken during the year and who proceeds to Honours in History in the following year.
Russel Ward Prize in History $500. Awarded to the undergraduate, if of sufficient merit, who obtains the best results in history units completed at the University of New England towards his or her undergraduate degree and who proceeds to Honours in History at the University of New England in the following year.

Economics

Mary Ambrose Memorial Prize

$300. Awarded to the external undergraduate in the Faculty of Arts or the Faculty of Economics, Business and Law, if of sufficient merit, who obtains the best results in the units ECON 310 and ECON 311 taken in the same or consecutive years.

R S Neale Memorial Prizes

$75 Awarded to the student achieving the best result, if of sufficient merit, in ECON 141.

English, Communication & Theatre

The Australian Federation of University Women - NSW (Armidale Branch)

Two awards of $125. Women undergraduates. Awarded to the best woman student in: (1) ENGL 100; and (2) first year course in the Faculty of the Sciences, if of sufficient merit, in the annual examinations.

The G J Borny Prize TBA (possibly wont be awarded).

$100. To be awarded to the best student, if any, obtaining First Class Honours in Theatre Studies and demonstrating exceptional ability in the areas of scholarship, research and production.

The Elizabeth Craigie Award Two awards of $1,000 each, awarded to the students who gain the best overall results, if of sufficient merit, in ENGL 101 and 102.

The Peter Elkin Drama Prize

$100. Awarded to the student, if of sufficient merit, who most distinguishes himself or herself in course work in Theatre Studies.

The Friends of the Cinema Prize in Film Studies

$100. Awarded to the student who, if of sufficient merit, obtains the best results in COMM 180 Film: Style and Story, at the University of New England.

The Associate Professor W G Hoddinott Memorial Scholarship in English

$300. Awarded to the undergraduate student, if of sufficient merit, who gains the best results in ENGL 101 and 102 and who enrols in either ENGL 341 or ENGL 351 in the following year. Application is not necessary.

The W G Hoddinott Prizes in English

$100. Awarded to the undergraduate student, if of sufficient merit, in two 300-level literature units (from ABEN 373; ENGL 321, 341, 351, 361, 362, 372, 375 and 390) within a calendar year. The "best result" will be calculated by averaging the final marks for the two units.

The Richard B Smith Memorial Prize

$25. Awarded to the undergraduate who obtains the best results, if of sufficient merit, in ENGL 101 and 102.

The University Players' Prize

$150. Awarded to the student, if of sufficient merit, who has completed the requirements for a degree including a major in Theatre Studies and who has most distinguished herself or himself in both the practical and theoretical areas in Theatre Studies.

The H M Wragge Memorial Scholarship

$400. Awarded to the best student entering Honours in English, if of sufficient merit, who has the best overall record in 200 and 300‑level units in English at this University.

Languages, Cultures & Linguistics

The Goethe Prize for German Studies

A book prize and a certificate awarded by the Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany. Awarded to the best student in any one year in German, provided that the prize may be awarded only once to any one student. Where a student has, in the opinion of the Head of the School of Languages, Cultures & Linguistics, an exceptional advantage by reason of prolonged residence in a German speaking country, the student is not eligible for the award of the prize.

The Steve Johnson Prizes in Linguistics

Two awards of $100 each:
(i) Awarded to the student who gains the best result, if of sufficient merit, in LING 101 and 102: and
(ii) awarded for the most distinguished performance by a student, if of sufficient merit, in 200 or 300 level units in Linguistics.

The Grahame Jones Memorial Prize

Books to the value of $100. Awarded to a continuing student of French if of sufficient merit, who has gained the best results in a combination of post-first-year units - totalling 24 credit points and including at least 12 credit points of 200-level language - studied in the same year.

The Peter Thomas Prize in Languages

$100. Awarded annually to the student who, in the opinion of the Head of the School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics, has had the most distinguished record in 300 level language units.

The Bronnie Treloar Scholarship.

$500. Awarded to the best student entering the BA (Honours) in French if of sufficient merit, who has the best overall record in French at this University within his/her undergraduate degree.

The Bronnie Treloar Prize in French

$100. Awarded annually to the best student completing two of the elective units in French if of sufficient merit.

Human and Environmental Studies

The Australian Association of Consulting Planners Award

$200. Awarded to the student who, in the Planning Dissertation or Planning Report, provides most evidence of the development of new ideas, approaches or other innovations of relevance to the town planning profession and who has demonstrated a sound understanding of the factors influencing town planning practice and excellence in the communication of thought and information.

The prize will be awarded on the recommendation of the Head of the School of Human and Environmental Studies on the advice of the unit coordinator of GEPL 455.

Students recommended for consideration for the award must submit an abstract of their report or dissertation to be eligible.

The prize will only be awarded if work of sufficient merit is submitted.

The Gilbert Butland Prize for Geography

$150. Awarded to the student who performs best in GEPL 111 and 222 or 211 and 214 in the one year.

The J W Fox Prize in Regional Geography.

$300. Awarded on the recommendation of the Head of the School of Human and Environmental Studies to a student who is enrolled in or has completed a 300- or 400-level unit in Geography and Planning, irrespective of the Faculty in which he/she is enrolled, and who submits an essay of approximately 4000 words in length which demonstrates an outstanding appreciation of regional geography.

The Geographical Society of New South Wales Annual Prize for GEPL 111 and 112

Books to the value of $50. Awarded to the undergraduate, if of sufficient merit, who obtains the best results in GEPL 111 and 112.

The Griffith Taylor Centenary Prize for Geography.

$175. Undergraduates and postgraduate students presenting theses or dissertations in Geography. Awarded each year on the recommendation of the Head of the School of Human and Environmental Studies to the student who produces the best thesis or dissertation in Geography, provided it is certified by the Head of the School of Human and Environmental Studies to be of at least First Class Honours Bachelors standard, or, in the case of works submitted for Masters or PhD degrees, of a corresponding standard of excellence. In any year when there is no thesis or dissertation of the requisite standard, the prize shall not be awarded.

The Marjorie Propsting Award

$500. Awarded annually to a female student who achieves the best result in GEPL 455.

Mathematical & Computer Sciences

The Eleanor Kitto Memorial Prize

$150. Awarded to the external student, if of sufficient merit, who has gained the best result in a second or third year Pure Mathematics unit.

Music

Cecil Hill Prize

$120. Awarded on the recommendation of the Head of Music to the student with the best undergraduate record in 300 level units taught by Music.

The Barbara Levien Prize for First Year Music

$300. Awarded at the discretion of the Head of Music and the Co-ordinator of Musicology to the student who gains the highest aggregate mark in First Year Musicology units.

Psychology

The Shirley Barratt Memorial Scholarship in Psychology

$500. Awarded annually to a student in any Faculty, if of sufficient merit, with the highest average grade, or in the event of two students have the same average grade, the highest average mark, in six 300‑level units in Psychology, including PSYC 302, or their equivalent, who enrols in PSYC 401 in the following year.

Social Sciences
J H Bell Prize for First Year Sociology $80. Awarded to the undergraduate who gains the best result, if of sufficient merit, in first year Sociology.
J H Bell Prize for Second Year Sociology $100. Awarded to the undergraduate who gains the best result, if of sufficient merit, in two 200‑level Sociology units.
J H. Bell Prize for Third Year Sociology $200. Awarded to the undergraduate who gains the best result, if of sufficient merit, in two 300‑level Sociology units.
The Arthur J Davies Prize in Politics $40. To be awarded to the student with the most outstanding result in Honours, if of sufficient distinction, whose thesis is in the field of Australian Politics and Public Administration.
D H Drummond Memorial Prize in Politics $50. Awarded to the undergraduate who obtains the best results in any two 300‑level Political Science and International Relations unit.

Professor D R Grey Prizes in Philosophy

Four prizes, each $100. One prize is awarded in each of the first, second, third and fourth years in Philosophy to the best student, if of sufficient merit, in his/her year. The minimum criteria of sufficient merit shall be: First Year Philosophy - High Distinction; Second or Third Year Philosophy - at least one unit at 200 or 300 level passed with Distinction; Fourth Year Philosophy - First Class Honours or High Second Class Division I.
The Hammarskjold Prize Book(s) to the value of $50. An eligible student must be under 25 when commencing study of 100 level Politics units. The awardee of the Australian Institute of Political Science Prize shall not be eligible for the Hammarskjold Prize. The prize will be awarded on the basis of results for the two major essays in two 100 level Politics units. Where more than one student receives equal highest marks, the opinion of the tutors on participation in tutorials shall be considered. If more than one student remains in contention for the prize, preference is to be shown for a female student.
The Hewison Prize in Asian Studies

Awarded annually to the student who has the highest grade point average for all units completed within an Asian Studies major in a UNE degree.

The Ian Loaney Prize in Politics $100. To be awarded annually to the Master of Letters student in Politics with the most outstanding overall result, if of sufficient distinction.
The Colin Tatz Prize in Politics $60. Awarded to the undergraduate who obtains the best results in any two 100‑level Politics (including International Relatons) units.
Planning

Anthony Bernard Cunningham Memorial Prize

$400. Awarded annually to the student completing the Bachelor of Urban & Regional Planning course who, in the opinion of the course coordinator, has had the most distinguished academic record for the duration of the course, and is deemed to have sufficient merit.

The Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources Prize

$500 per year. Awarded to the undergraduate, if of sufficient merit, who has the most distinguished academic record in the final year of the course for the degree of Bachelor of Urban & Regional Planning.
