Postgraduate Programs
General Introduction
Postgraduate work takes two forms: coursework and research.
Students can take additional coursework on top of their first degrees to learn more about their favourite subject or develop new interest or career paths. Programs vary in length from:
- certificate courses (about one year part-time),
- to postgraduate diplomas (at least one year full time, two years part-time), and
- coursework masters (approximately three years part-time).
For a full list of coursework postgraduate programs in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences see the Postgraduate Degree pages. If you see a program that interests you, contact Faculty Administration or the relevent contact person dealing with postgraduate awards for further details.
Secondly, students can undertake postgraduate programs by research.
The first research apprenticeship is honours, which can be taken either internally (over one year) or externally (over two years) in any discipline. Honours graduates, and those with good postgraduate diplomas (at least Pass with Merit), can then enrol in research masters degrees. These typically take one and a half to two years full time and double that part-time. The Faculty's honours program is listed together with undergraduate degrees while research masters programs are listed on the Postgraduate Degree pages.
Inquiries about honours and research masters programs should be directed initially to the Head of the relevant School. When you make you inquiry, please indicate the degree(s) that you already hold, the program in which you would like to enrol, and the research area that interests you. If you want general information about enrolling in Arts postgraduate programs, please consult the Postgraduate Information pages. For general Faculty rules and regulations surrounding postgraduate programs, see the Degree Information pages.
Further information, including how to enrol for coursework postgraduate degrees is available on the student centre pages at: http://www.une.edu.au/for/future-students/postgraduates/
Similarly, further information for prospective research postgraduate degrees can be found at: http://www/une.edu.au/research-services/pgstudy/prospectivestudents/ and information for continuing research postgraduate students is available at: http://www/une.edu.au/research-services/pgstudy/currentstudents/The University's flagship research degree is the doctorate (or PhD). Students considering enrolling in a PhD should hold either a research masters degree, or a first-class honours degree (or upper 2 (1)), or a postgraduate diploma at the level of Pass with Exceptional Merit. If you are interested in enrolling in a PhD, we recommend that you first consult with the Head of School in which the relevant discipline is located - see Academic Units.
Although the PhD candidate's supervisor may be located in the Faculty of Arts, the degree itself is administered by UNE Research Services. Prospective students might also like to consult with UNEPA (the UNE Postgraduate Association). If you are concerned about the prospects of obtaining a Scholarship to fund your study, please consult the Scholarships Office .
The Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences also offers a D Psych, a professional doctorate in Psychology. Interested students should consult the Head of School.
