Graduate Diploma in Horticultural Science

The Diploma in Horticultural Science is offered to graduates who have completed some units in Biology and Chemistry during their undergraduate studies. The Diploma consists of approximately 60% course work and 40% research, culminating in the production of a thesis.

Areas of research interest at UNE are Plant Tissue Culture and Biotechnology, Development of New Crops (mainly Australian native plants with horticultural potential and medicinal properties), and Environmental Horticulture.

The period of candidature is one year as a full-time candidate and up to eight consecutive semesters as a part-time candidate. More information can be obtained from Professor Acram Taji on (02) 6773 2869 fax (02) 6773 3238 international prefix (+61 2), or e-mail ataji@une.edu.au

Certificate and Postgraduate Certificate in Agriculture

The year of 1994 was a significant milestone for Agronomy and Soil Science. This was the year that AGSS, in co-operation with the Cooperative Research Centre for Sustainable Cotton Production and the New South Wales Education and Training Foundation, enrolled 30 students in the new Certificate and Post-Graduate Certificate in Agriculture degree. The external degree is being offered to those students involved in the cotton industry as farmers and consultants. The degree offers, at two different levels, the applied scientific basis for sustainable cotton production. Students, after finishing the degree, will have a solid working knowledge of cotton physiology, nutrition, soil management, pest-, weed-, and disease-control, environmental protection aspects, and post-crop processes of ginning and spinning. This course is breaking new ground in the applied education of professional personnel involved in the Australian cotton industry. Now in its eighth year, it has been well received and should have a long future.

Training Courses in Plant Tissue Culture

These professional training courses are offered in the form of residential workshops and cover basic theory and practice of plant tissue culture with hands-on experience in all practical aspects of micropropagation.

These workshops are suited to researchers entering this area of biotechnology, nursery people or teachers wanting to set up a small tissue culture facility for plant propagation and/or educational purposes.
