Research on local movement of Helicoverpa spp.

Our field site, in the Cecil plains area of the Darling Downs, southern Queensland, is a diverse cropping region with many host crops for Helicoverpa spp. We set up networks of light and pheromone traps within a radius of several km of sunflower crops such as these, and determine whether the moths we collect carry sunflower pollen, indicating that they have visited the crops. Scanning electron micrographs such as this one reveal the presence of
sunflower pollen (the spiny round objects) and sometimes pollen from
other plants. In this specimen pollen from Eucalyptus spp. is present
(the triangular shaped objects). Photo: Peter Gregg
