Natural Resources Law and Policy
Issues of carbon, water, energy and climate change present novel threats, and perhaps some opportunities, for rural producers and communities. Most scientific effort is focused on understanding the issues, and in developing technologies to help to reduce the risks and aid in adaptation. Good policy science will be equally needed.
Ensuring efficient adoption of technologies, or compliance with constraints that science will suggest, will require sophisticated strategies. The most effective will combine economic incentives, legal constraints, marketing and communications, with community education. Institutional structures and governance arrangements will have to be aligned to support these policy initiatives. Sound policy science exists at UNE, which can be harnessed to aid adjustment.
UNE’s research programs span the physical and social sciences. Some of this research is concentrated in specialised Centres within the University, or through collaborative arrangements within Australia or internationally. Individual researchers within the ten disciplinary Schools of the University carry out other work.
