Australia's Regional Frontiers

This group comprises a number of productive scholars who are eager to cultivate advanced, cross-disciplinary research into the history, archeology and folklore of rural and regional Australia.

Drawing on the collaboration and expertise fostered within UNE's Heritage Futures Research Centre (since 2001), the group is dedicated to enhancing the well-being of rural communities through public and applied research in partnership with government agencies, community organisations and individuals with an interest in Australia’s early history and heritage.

The team aims to facilitate the interpretation and use of regional history and heritage places, in order to develop frameworks for enhancing the welfare and sustainability of rural communities. This involves the acquisition of new knowledge and fresh understandings of regional history and heritage in order to foster heritage/cultural tourism, environmental preservation, social sustainability, rural health and well-being.
