The Arts, Media, Culture and Society

Dr Anne Pender

We work at the frontiers of research in literature, theatre, cinema, music, language, communications and media studies. Our research focuses on the creative arts with special attention to their significance for humanity. We believe that the arts help to provide the conditions for a truly civil society, that they are intrinsically valuable and that an understanding of the arts benefits society in many different ways.

Our special interests are in:

  • Australian literature and film
  • Performance (Theatre and Music)
  • British and American literature and film
  • Creative writing
  • Contemporary media
  • Gender and Society
  • French, German, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Indonesian language, literature and culture

We have expertise in each of these areas of study and work on many inter-disciplinary projects with scholars in history, classics, philosophy, archaeology,  sociology and education. Our research is innovative, socially engaged and challenging.
