Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation

Professor Bob Martin

Climate change adaptation and mitigation is a key research priority for the Primary Industries Innovation Centre (PIIC).

PIIC is a collaborative venture between UNE and the NSW Department of Primary Industries.

PIIC is undertaking research and delivering solutions on a range of climate change issues.   Key research strategies in climate change for PIIC are to:

  • Develop tools for the implementation of a sustainable and regionally based bioenergy industry;
  • Develop crop, pasture and livestock technologies that capture carbon, reduce emissions and are adapted to climate change;
  • Develop innovative approaches to coping with extreme climatic events and incursions by exotic weeds, diseases and pests;
  • Provide policy and risk management solutions for drought, fire, invasive weeds, pests and diseases in a climate change scenario.

PIIC also assists with educating and informing primary producers about the projected impacts of climate change and the challenges and opportunities it poses, as well as informing the debate on key policy issues – such as emission trading.
