Peace Studies

Dr Bert Jenkins

Peace Studies is an interdisciplinary research field that covers many diverse areas including: Peacebuilding, Peacemaking and Conflict Resolution, Environmental Security, Refugee Studies, Peaceful Futures, Nonviolence, Social Justice, Peacekeeping, Reconciliation & Justice, Human Rights, Peace Education, Development, and Psychosocial Issues (dealing with Trauma).

The main focus of research is the ‘Transformation’ of conflict by addressing issues of cultural and structural violence. To do this we advocate the need to concentrate not only on the violence itself but also the root causes of conflict that lead to violence. This involves peacebuilding processes working at the community interface in conflict-affected societies in collaboration with civil society agencies (NGOs), governments and international organizations and often with peacekeeping operations.

Because of the interdisciplinary nature of Peace Research there are important and necessary links to other areas such as: International Politics, Studies in Religion, History, Indigenous Studies, Sociology, Counselling, Public Policy, Geography, Ecosystems Management, Education, Law, and Economics.
