Assessment
What you need to do to successfully complete a unit varies depending on your chosen subject. For each subject you will be provided with detailed information on what will be required of you. Most undergraduate programs assess students using a combination of assignments and exams. Postgraduate programs often involve research dissertations.
At the beginning of your course of study you will receive introductory teaching material which will tell you in detail the type and length of the assignments required, how many you will have to complete, due dates and whether you will also need to sit an exam. You can submit your assignments in person or by post. Most Unit Coordinators will accept assignments via email, but check with your Unit Coordinator to make sure your assignment will be accepted if delivered this way. If you are an online student, you will be able to access your grades via the Internet, as soon as your assignment has been graded. Online and off-campus students will receive their graded assignments with comments via post.
If you find you need an extension of time for an assignment, contact your Faculty office. Extensions of time may be granted in special circumstances, such as an illness, but you must apply for an extension of time before the due date of the assignment.
You may need to sit an exam to complete your subject. Your Unit Coordinator will be able to advise you of this and will also let you know the general format of the exam paper. You may also find this information in your study material.
Examinations
Examinations are held in major centres throughout Australia and overseas. On enrolment, students nominate the centre they wish to attend. Students within Australia will be required to travel up to 120 kilometres to an established centre. Students wishing to sit their examinations at an overseas centre will be required to travel up to 300 kilometres to an established centre and incur an administration fee of $200.00.
Students wishing to change their examination centre are required to notify the Examinations and Graduation Unit:
1. in the case of centres within Australia, a minimum of three weeks’ notice is required prior to the commencement of the examination period;
2. in the case of overseas centres, a minimum of six weeks’ notice is required prior to the commencement of the examination period.
Should unforeseen circumstances arise, and a request of change of centre is needed after these dates, arrangements may be able to be made at the discretion of the Examinations and Graduation Unit. Where alternative arrangements are able to be made an administration fee of $30.00 will be charged.
Special provisions can be made for students with a disability.
Examinations are held in June/July and November. Approximately eight weeks prior to the commencement of the examination period the Examinations and Graduation Unit will notify you by mail of the location and time of your examination. Timetable information is also available at this time online at http://www.une.edu.au. Click on the “Examination Timetable” link. Candidates who have been prevented from sitting an examination by illness or any other unforeseen circumstances, including a change in work requirements, are eligible to apply for a special examination. Candidates are advised to familiarise themselves with the Faculty regulations on special examinations which can be found in the University Handbook. Candidates who sit an examination but feel that there were circumstances prior to or during the examination, which, although they might not qualify them for a special examination, nevertheless, affected their performance in the examination, may ask that the examiner be made aware of these circumstances and that they be taken into consideration when their results are assessed.
External candidates should make application in a letter to the relevant Faculty Office, University of New England, Armidale. Your application should include any supporting documentation and must be received by no later than five working days following the date of the examination.
Examination results will be sent to your Mailing Address as soon as possible following ratification and will also be available online at http://www.une.edu.au. Click on the “Results online” link — your UNE password and username are required to access this site. Results cannot be given over the phone for confidentiality reasons.
