The Science Pathways is an accessible program for students without the traditional educational background for direct admission into a science-based degree program at UNE.
The Science Pathways program does not require you to have a background in science, and you may apply if you have not completed senior secondary education.
Mature age students may consider applying for the Science Pathways as a way of commencing tertiary study, while professionals who require a basic foundation in the sciences for their current role may also benefit from these introductory units.
Successfully completing the Science Pathways program will provide the foundation for admission into many specialised undergraduate science degrees at UNE. If you are interested in studying science, but not sure where to start, the Science Pathways is for you.
The Bachelor of Scientific Studies
The Science Pathways are contained within the Bachelor of Scientific Studies. In the Bachelor of Scientific Studies you will complete four core units in basic sciences, as a foundation to your scientific education. These units provide a basic understanding of scientific concepts, and help you to develop research, problem solving and analytical skills. They teach you to challenge ideas, use logic and step-by-step reasoning, and develop teamwork and communication skills.
Chemistry is a relevant and stimulating subject. It is involved in everything around us - from the making of new materials to understanding biological systems.
Chemistry forms the basis of the food we eat to the medicines which keep us healthy, and understanding and maintaining safe water supplies to the quality of the air we breathe. This unit focuses on the role of chemistry within society and provides fundamental chemistry concepts, relevant for further study.
Introduction to Quantitative Skills
The ability to understand data, to process data, and to extract value from it, is key to all areas of science.
Quantitative skills includes the ability to design surveys or experiments to assess and use the data that is gathered, to determine the validity of scientific research, and the communication of results. This unit prepares students for quantitative skills required in other science units together with providing a foundation to further study in maths.
Physics brings a broad perspective to any problem and this innovative thinking is desirable for all of the sciences.
Physics encompasses the study of the universe from the largest galaxies to the smallest subatomic particles. Physics forms the basis of many other sciences, including chemistry, earth sciences, hydrology, and aspects of physiology. This unit is intended for students who did not study high school Physics and provides a general physics proficiency for general science and a basis for further study in physics.
Science in Practice
In this unit you learn how major scientific breakthroughs are achieved and develop an appreciation of the way in which science operates.
You will learn how scientific findings are communicated, and how science impacts upon and is perceived by society. This subject explores differences between good and questionable science, and the ethics behind scientific research methods. You will gain skills in research design, information management and representation and interpretation of data relevant to all the disciplines that science has to offer.
In your Bachelor of Scientific Studies you will then choose elective units from one of the five Science Pathways: Agriculture, Computer Science, Sports and Exercise Science, Health Science, or the Natural and Physical sciences. By successfully completing the four core units and four elective units from your chosen pathway, you may be eligible to transfer into a more specialised degree of your choice.

The Diploma in Science
In addition to the Bachelor of Scientific Studies, we also offer a Diploma in Science. The Diploma in Science is a flexible, one year (full-time) program that allows students to gain basic skills and knowledge across a broad range of scientific disciplines. Graduates will have a broad scientific knowledge that allows them to pursue further study, or to assist in future employment.
Within the Diploma in Science there are two approved programs of study: the General Studies in Science, and the Medical Sciences program. Find out more about each of these programs below:
General Studies in Science
The General Studies in Science program offers the maximum flexibility for students to design their own program of study, taking into account their background knowledge and interests. Students can choose from an extensive list of units, focusing their study on one particular discipline, or mixing units from a range of different areas. The General Studies in Science program can be used as a pathway into further study in the sciences, or for entry into teacher education courses.
The Medical Sciences program is designed for students who are working towards entry into medical or paramedical courses, or who may wish to work in allied health fields. The Medical Sciences program provides students with fundamental skills in chemistry and physics, plus a solid understanding of human physiology. Professional communication and quantitative skills are also included in this program.
