Arrawarra Coastal Field Station

The marine field station is located at Arrawarra Headland, on the northern New South Wales coast, adjacent to the Solitary Island Marine Park which supports substantial coral communities. The station was established in the late 1960's to provide a base for both teaching and research. The location of the station is ideal, providing easy access to a full range of marine and estuarine habitats.

Accommodation, kitchen, laboratory facilities (including aquaria with flow-through sea-water) vessels (two ocean going and one for estuarine use) are available at the station. Limited computing facilities are available including access to the Internet.

CT Scanner

The current model CT Scanner (whole body) is a GE Lightspeed QXi 4 Slice. It is available for scanning live animals, animal carcass' and skeletal structures.

Level 1 $90/hr $18/bed load Internal users Includes honours, masters and PhD students (i.e. all clients not included in Levels 2 & 3).
Level 2 $108/hr $25/bed load Outside funded projects Includes DPI Beef Centre and CRCs, other UNE research projects.

Decision Support Software - eDDServe
  • eDSServe offers educational access to the powerful decision support tools used in agriculture and natural resources, and was developed by the University of New England's DSS unit.
  • These software tools are commercially available, and are important in modelling grazing enterprises and ruminant nutrition.
  • eDSServe allows any students enrolled in a UNE teaching program access to almost any Windows application suitable for teaching purposes.
Digital Camera and Microscope Facilities

Very high resolution (~23 MP) photos and videos of thin sections and smear slides, captured through a trinocular lens.

The facility is a Canon EOS 70D DSLR, mounted onto a Leica DM750P polarizing microscope.

Engineering Facilities

ERS has provided an excellent laboratory environment to be used in elementary, mid-scale and advanced experimental investigations as foundations for developing new analytical work in areas of discipline interest/specialisation. 

New equipment for the concrete and structural laboratories, including

  • a 300 kN Hydraulic Universal  Testing  Machine  with  long  gage  length  Extensometer,
  • 200  mm  G.L.,  25mm  travel  and  a  2,000  kN Compression Testing Machine with fully computerized and built-in data acquisition and data analysis systems, has been  purchased  from  Instron  USA.
  • multiple  data  logger  (including  strain  gauges),
  • LVDTs  as  well  as  new  laser sensors which  can  be  used  for  lab-based  and  filed-based  testings.

Existing equipment including:

  • a testing frame, which is equipped with a hydraulic jack with the capacity of 100 kN
  • hydraulic jack  with  a  maximum  capacity  of  500  kN  is  available  at  the  project area  of  the  engineering  building.
  • Surveying equipment was updated in 2013 to include total stations to precisely map the natural and built environment. The surveying store also includes basic engineering surveying equipment.
Fluid Inclusion Facility

A USGS heating-cooling stage is available for fluid inclusion studies.

Mineral, Rock, Fossil and Drill Core Collection

The School maintains a comprehensive collection of rock and fossil samples from research collections. These are predominantly from the New England region (the most comprehensive collection of New England rocks worldwide). Approximately 75,000 rock samples are catalogued.

The School also maintains a small core library, with a selection of drill core from Eastern Australia.

The Mineral, Rock, Fossil and Drill Core Collection is available for research work undertaken by all students and staff of UNE, as well as other universities and research institutions.

Natural History Museum

Opened in March 2017, the UNE Natural History Museum is a redevelopment of the original Zoology Museum established in 1969. Located in the recently built Agricultural Education Building, the move into this modern teaching facility afforded UNE the chance to showcase material from our botanical, geological and palaeontological collections along-side our comprehensive collection of zoological specimens.

N.C.W Beadle Herbarium

The N.C.W. Beadle Herbarium (NE) at UNE consists of c.100 000 vascular plant specimens, housed in a purpose built facility with excellent stereomicroscopes and specimen imaging equipment. Herbarium NE was the first university-only herbarium to deliver data to Australia's Virtual Herbarium and Atlas of Living Australia (c. 83 000 records from 2013). Herbarium NE is internationally recognised, and is able to exchange specimens with, borrow from and lend to other recognised herbaria.

Thin Section Facility

The School has facilities for the preparation of thin, polished thin and polished sections, including fluid inclusion plates.

Section manufacture includes thin sections, polished thin sections, polished blocks, doubly polished fluid inclusion plates, impregnation of soft or fractured samples, and K-feldspar staining.

The Thin Section Facility is available for research work undertaken by all students and staff of UNE.
