Questions About Questions

Asking questions is a good way to find things out, including what your students know. However not all questions have single, unambiguous answers. Sometimes this can be used creatively to generate discussion about a subject and deepen understanding. At all times we need to be aware of the tendency so that we avoid unwanted ambiguity and can understand the meaning of the answers that we receive. This presentation analyses a number of examples of questions without single answers and discusses how they can be used effectively (or sometimes abused) in the context of teaching, developing understanding and assessment.
