Bachelor of Education (Primary)

This degree contains 80 days* of professional experience in a school setting. These placements are embedded in EDUC104, EDIT100, EDLT219, EDSP324 and EDCX302.  All professional experience placements in a school setting must meet the following requirements to be counted for placement. The school must:

  • Assess teacher proficiency against the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers;
  • Use NESA approved syllabuses or equivalent Australian syllabuses;

All placements must be in a mainstream classroom unless otherwise specified.

*Teacher Education Students choosing the Internship elective version of the course will be required to complete a further 50 days of professional experience in the unit PREX396 meaning that there will be 130 days of professional experience to complete in this course.

Before undertaking the final placement, all Teacher Education Students in this degree must complete and pass both components of the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students.

EDUC104 (PrEx 10) 

Specific Requirements

This is a 10 day block placement in a primary school setting where the pre-service teacher will be assessed against the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.


Placements that can be accepted

  • Mainstream primary classrooms
  • Distance Education settings
  • Special Education settings*

Pre-service teachers may only complete one placement in Distance Education, or Special Education setting in EDUC104
or EDIT100 or EDLT219.

*For special education settings, the curriculum must align with the NSW/Australian Curriculum and the class must be in a primary school.


Placements that cannot be accepted

  • Work in a tutoring agency
  • Work as an au pair
  • Employment as a governess (or equivalent position)
  • Employment as teacher's aide (or equivalent position such as a Learning Support Officer)
  • Release from Face-to-Face (RFF) Placements
  • Library placements
EDIT100 (PrEx 10) 

This Placement and Information Technology

This placement is embedded in the unit EDIT100. While the unit content is about learning Information Technology (IT), the placement is not directly related to IT so does not need to be in a computer class. Information Technology is covered in the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers as part of the whole of teaching.

This is a 10 day block placement in a primary school setting where the pre-service teacher will be assessed against the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.

EDIT100 Specific Requirements


Placements that can be accepted

  • Mainstream primary classrooms
  • Distance Education settings
  • Special Education settings*

Pre-service teachers may only complete one placement in Distance Education, or Special Education setting in EDUC104
or EDIT100 or EDLT219.

This Placement and Planning and Assessment for Learning

This placement is embedded in the unit EDLT219. The placement is not directly associated with planning and assessment for learning yet planning for assessment is part of teaching as a whole.

This is a 20 day block placement in a primary
school
setting where the pre-service teacher will be assessed against the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.

EDLT219 Specific Requirements


Placements that can be accepted

  • Mainstream primary classrooms
  • Distance Education settings
  • Special Education settings*

Pre-service teachers may only complete one placement in Distance Education,  or Special Education setting in EDUC104 or EDIT100 or EDLT219.

This Placement and Classroom Behaviour Management

This placement is embedded in the unit EDSP324. The placement component does not require a Special Education setting as behaviour and classroom management are part of teaching as a whole as outlined in the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.

EDCX302 (PrEx 20) 

This Placement and Aboriginal Education

This placement is embedded in the unit EDCX302. It
is not a requirement of the placement to be completed in a setting with a
specific ratio of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students.
Cultural perspectives and understanding, differentiation of curriculum, disability support strategies and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education strategies are included in the Australian Professional Standards
for Teachers.


Specific Requirements

This placement must be completed in a 20 day block in a primary
school
setting where the pre-service teacher will be assessed against the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.

EDCX302 Specific Requirements


Graduate Level Placements

This is the final placement where the pre-service teacher is assessed against all of the Australian Professional Standards for teachers at the Graduate Level as per BOSTES requirements.

PREX396 (50 day Internship)

Internship

This placement is part of the elective version of the Bachelor of Education (Primary) and consists of a 50 day placement in a New South Wales school.


Specific Requirements

This placement must be completed in a 50 day block in a primary
school
setting where the pre-service teacher will be assessed against the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at the Graduate level.

For this placement, students (pre-service teachers) will be responsible for 0.6 of a weekly teaching load under minimal supervision once they reach the second phase of the Internship. They must also complete an Action Research Project as part of another unit.

This Internship can only be completed in a New South Wales school as UNE does not have any Internship agreement with any other states.
