About Us

Welcome to The School of Education:
Access. Equity. Opportunity. Vision.

Our vision: The School of Education at the University of New England (UNE) engages and influences students, communities and society through innovative flexible practices in research and teaching across Australia and internationally. We value our students’ uniqueness and inspire them to become lifelong learners.

The School of Education is situated in the Faculty of Humanities, Arts, Social Science and Education and focuses on early childhood, primary and secondary teacher education.

We offer ongoing professional learning for teachers in Graduate Certificate, Masters degree and short non-award courses. We provide some courses on campus and a wide range of online education courses to Australian and international students.

We are also a research School, emphasising issues in rural and regional education, with a National Centre of Science, Information and Communication Technology, and Mathematics Education for Rural and Regional Australia (SiMERR) and research strengths in other areas including English and literacy education, student diversity and disability studies, health and physical education, and improving schooling in developing countries.

We offer education in the Pacific region with a strong focus on Nauru and Tuvalu where we offer on pre and in-service education programs. Delivery of programs is flexible, offering online and classroom teaching through a blended model. The aim of the program is to build the skills of locals with an internationally recognised teaching qualification.

Our research students include people undertaking PhD, Professional Doctorates and Masters by research programs, locally, regionally, across Australia and internationally. The School of Education is a large community with a wide national and international reach, as well as a strong commitment to education in our local area.

Wherever you are based, you are very welcome in the UNE School of Education community.

So, you want to become a teacher or develop your teaching career?

The School of Education at UNE offers a number of pathways to achieve this. Our innovative approaches to on-campus and online learning and teaching have been developed and implemented to maintain our standard of excellence. Because our courses are flexible in delivery, you can study for a degree outside of the hours you need to spend maintaining your workplace or family commitments. We are mindful of the need to deliver the most relevant and thoughtful course options to you—no matter where you are in the world.

You are able to choose from our wide range of study options that are offered as undergraduate and postgraduate coursework degrees, or higher degree research courses at the master and doctoral levels.

We provide support to doctoral and masters students in research training, knowledge transfer and innovation. We allocate experienced research supervisors to each student to maximise the research training experience, culminating in a high level of original research outputs that contribute to various discipline areas. A number of scholarships as well as the Commonwealth Government's Research Training Scheme (which offers fee exemptions for eligible students) are further opportunities available to support you in your research endeavours.

We offer flexible learning environments

We are one of the leading providers of online education to students all around the world. The University of New England has been a pioneer and leader in the provision of high-quality distance education since its inception as a college of the University of Sydney in 1938, followed by UNE becoming an independent University in 1954.

Our on-campus courses are rated highly in graduate satisfaction with students benefiting from small class sizes and an excellent student-to-staff ratio.

Our staff, experienced in both on-campus and online modes of course delivery, are driven by research and informed by practice, resulting in courses that are constantly changing to meet the needs of the real world and maintaining their relevancy in a wide variety of organisations to enhance your employment and promotion prospects.
