Sediments

An integral part of the AIA methodology is establishment of a relationship between production and location. An important aspect of this work is the identification and analysis of sediments from which the clays used for ceramics in antiquity derive. Note we do not seek to identify the clays themselves for problems too numerous to ennumerate here. Through a combination of GIS and ground truthing project geomorphologist, Ben Marsh, , characterises site catchments, rock types and erosional characteristics to identify sediment samples that are most likely to relate to ancient ceramics in terms of a shared geochemical trace.
