Objectives: Students who successfully complete this unit will:

  • Have an understanding of a variety of different research methods and be able to develop a coherent research design;
  • Understand the protocol and ethics required in the conduct of research; and
  • Be aware of the potential problems pertaining to the planning and conduct of research and be able to evaluate the research work of others.

Content: The purpose of this unit is to provide a practical background to the methods of undertaking research; including formulating hypotheses, selecting methodologies, collecting and processing qualitative and quantitative data, and the organisation and presentation of results. Examination is by a report of original research which should exemplify these principles.

Assessment: Two written assignments, each worth 50% of the total assessment.
