Objectives: Students who successfully complete this unit should:

  • become familiar with the range of techniques, methods and materials employed in dealing with the archaeology of the modern world
  • develop a broad comprehension of major contending theoretical frameworks about what constitutes historical, colonial or post­medieval archaeology
  • acquire a general knowledge about the issues and problems involved in several substantive areas of historical archaeology
  • augment your working vocabulary to help interpret historical archaeological texts
  • develop your ability to converse and write in a manner appropriate to a professional historical archaeologist.

Content: In this unit issues relating to the archaeology of the modern world and global economy are addressed. Drawing on case studies from around the globe the course explores the material impacts of social, economic and environmental change over the last 500 years.
