Objectives:Students who complete this unit will have an:

  • Appreciation of art and its complex role in human societies
  • Awareness of the value of art as evidence for telling the story of the past
  • Knowledge of a range of theoretical and methodological approaches for analysing and interpreting art evidence.
  • Understanding the historical continuities of some art practices from remote times.

Content: All humans have some form of art, marking both themselves and the landscapes they live in, in distinctive ways. This unit explores the origins and nature of art, cave painting, art and shamanism, body decoration and art objects around the world through case studies from archaeology and related disciplines. The case studies will include modern graffiti and body modifications.

Assessment: Short answer test 25%, Tutorial 35%, Essay & Photo Portfolio 2,000 30%, Participation 10%
