Objectives: Students who undertake this unit will:

  • Develop an understanding of what is involved in organising and successfully completing archaeological fieldwork;
  • Increase knowledge of theory & practice underlying fieldwork;
  • Develop practical field skills;
  • Provide hands-on experience of archaeological fieldwork.

Content: Archaeology is a very practical discipline and field work is both exciting and informative. This unit is based around a field project. Students attend a six-day residential school. Readings, exercises and field experience introduce archaeological field work. Topics include excavation, legislative requirements, logistical planning, negotiation, sampling, site formation, site recording, surveying and stratigraphy. Different field areas used every year depending on availability and the research interests of staff.

Assessment: Exercises (15%), Field notebook (15%), Field report (40%), Exercises (25%), Fieldwork participation (5%).
