Objectives: Students who successfully complete this unit should:

  • Increase your knowledge of Australian Aboriginal (rock) art
  • Develop your understanding of the archaeological significance of rock art and the theoretical, analytical and practical aspects of rock art research
  • Provide hands on experience in assessing, recording and analysing rock art
  • Develop your critical thinking and analytical abilities
  • Increase your appreciation of Aboriginal culture and its achievements
  • Introduce you to basic conservation and management issues for archaeological sites, including rock art sites

Content: The unit provides an introduction to the archaeology of rock art with emphasis upon aboriginal Australia. It will also examine the historical and theoretical context of studies from Europe, Africa and North America. There will be emphasis on practical aspects of rock art research and management, and visits to rock art sites.

Assessment: Short answer test (25%); Tutorial questions (12 @ 500 words each) (48%), Essay (27%).
