Production of learning resources

The aim of this webpage and associated documents is to provide a guide to the processes associated with the submission, production and output of learning resources at UNE.

Providing Learning Materials to Students

Generally printed items, CDs or DVDs should only be used for specific items, such as Printed Practical Manuals, a large volume of audio files on CD or a long video on DVD. Unit information is usually provided online using a combination of unit specific content in the unit’s moodle site, and with standard school information and UNE wide information provided through links.

Learning Material Templates

TLC provides a single Word template that contains UNE styles. This Word Template is intended for use when creating materials that will be provided to students in PDF or print.

TLC no longer produces learning material templates with standard information (Unit Information and Assessment and Topic Notes).

Guides for using Microsoft Word are available for  PC and Mac users.

Contact TLC on #2999 for further assistance with use of the templates or questions about desktop publishing.

Making PDF files from Word Documents

PDF files are a useful way of providing your documents in a way that keeps them visually intact, ensuring that they will appear as intended for users on different computers.

Please be aware that there are some important things to consider if you are making PDFs that are to be available to your students either on CD or online, particularly if you are creating these on a Mac. Download our PC and Mac guides for details.

Check the PDF before submitting it to ensure that it has converted correctly. In particular check the table of contents as this can contain errors (bookmark not defined) if the table was not updated before the conversion.

Readings

Readings for eReserve should be supplied to the library. If TLC has previously scanned the readings you require we can provide these to the Library for you.

Information about eReserve is available on the eReserve — Staff page. The Library page Creating durable links to full-text articles has information on creating links to articles in online journals.

Items to be printed

Files for items to be printed should be provided electronically in PDF format if possible. If there is something unusual about the materials, e.g. specialised fonts etc, then a printed copy of the electronic file should be supplied as well for comparison. Before making your PDF, please ensure that your original document uses A4 page size, not US letter.

Copyright

Information about copyright can be found on the Copyright page.

Notifying students about online units

TLC arranges each teaching period to send an email to all students prior to the start of that teaching period. These emails notify  students of the release date of the online units and access details.

Forms

There are two forms which must accompany each submission.

Please download the forms to your computer and rename them with the Unit Code. The forms have been recreated by TLC and are supplied as interactive PDFs. They are able to be completed, saved, signed digitally and submitted either by email to TLC or via the TLC drop box with the material. Alternatively, they can be completed, printed out and signed, then either scanned and submitted via the TLC drop box or delivered to TLC.

Drop boxes

TLC has online drop boxes to provide a convenient way to deliver files and forms to TLC. Electronic copies of the Learning Materials Submission Forma and Copyright Forms, can be uploaded with the learning resources files. IF you use the drop box, please advise TLC (by email or phone #2999) when files have been uploaded. Drop Boxes are on the UNE server Barney at Stafffiles\Other\TLC Drop Boxes.

Alternatively, materials and/or forms can be delivered in person or via internal mail to the Teaching and Learning Centre. Work begins after all the components have been submitted.

Special Needs

Requests may be made to schools for materials to be converted into another format for students with special needs. TLC and Student Assist may be able to assist with the conversion and despatch these.
